episode_narrativeThe combination of some very light snow (for most the first snow of the season), road and air temperatures below freezing and heavy traffic volume because of Thanksgiving Day caused roadways to become extremely slippery and hazardous, especially on bridges and overpasses. Accumulations were less than an inch. But that was enough to cause numerous accidents across the area. Because of the holiday and the surprising roadway result of this light snow, it took a while for road crews to recover. Although the snow ended by 6 p.m. EDT, road conditions did not improve in some areas until 10 p.m EST. In Philadelphia, a 30-year-old woman died after losing control of her car and slammed into a tree. The Platt and Grays Ferry Bridges were closed from late afternoon until 9 p.m. EST. By 5 p.m. EST all the major arteries within the city had slowed to a crawl. In Chester County, two people were seriously injured in a four vehicle collision on a Pennsylvania State Route 100 bridge over the Schuylkill River. The U.S. Route 30 Bypass had many accidents. In West Goshen alone, emergency personnel responded to 43 accidents. The Tredyffrin Police had to close the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 202. In Delaware County, the Commodore Barry Bridge was closed due to icing until 9 p.m. EST.Pennsylvania State Route 309 was very icy in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Elsewhere in Montgomery County, portions of the Blue Route (Interstate 476) were closed as were the West Chester Pike over the Blue Route and U.S. Route 202 over the Dannehower Bridge. Many accidents were reported on Pennsylvania State Route 29 from Schwenksville to Collegeville and along Germantown Pike and U.S. Route 422.In the Lehigh Valley, the worst problems were in Northampton County. Travel was extremely treacherous along U.S. Route 22, Pennsylvania State Route 512 and over the Glendon Bridge.
