| episode_narrative | Iowa was located deep in the Arctic air. A quasi-stationary front was located from southwest Kansas through central Missouri, into southern Illinois. During the morning of the 25th, strong southwest winds of 40 knots developed aloft with warm and more moist air riding over the top of the Arctic air at the surface. A light and fluffy snow develped over about the north half of the state, although some light snow fall across the south as well. A narrow band of heavy snow developed with most of the significant snow falling during the afternoon of the 25th until around midnight. Snowfall of six inches or greater fell in a county wide swath extending from Sioux City, through Sac City, Fort Dodge, to Waterloo. Heavier snowfall in this area included 7.5 inches at Guthrie Center, 7 inches at Jewell and Rockwell City, and 6.7 inches at Williams. One unofficial amount of 9 inches was received from Sac City. To the north of the band a four to six inch snowfall fell in an area about a county wide, with two to four inches north of that to the Minnesota border. Amounts to the south of the band tapered off rapidly with two to five inches in a county wide band just south of the heavy snow, a one to two inches in a band about a county wide just south of that. The rest of the south two tiers of counties received an inch or less. The snow was light and fluffy with no significant wind as the snow fell. Travel was little affected by the snow with no significant loss reported. |
