| episode_narrative | A low pressure system developed near Cape Hatteras the morning of the 9th, intensified and moved slowly northeast during the next 24 hours. It reached Cape Cod the morning of the 10th. This caused a late season rain and snow storm across Eastern Pennsylvania. Precipitation started as rain in Southeast Pennsylvania and rain and snow farther north during the predawn hours on the 9th. Precipitation type became intensity dependent during the day on the 9th. When precipitation became heavier, it fell as snow; when its intensity decreased, it changed back to rain. Nevertheless above freezing temperatures plus indirect radiation from the April sun caused much of the snow to melt as it reached the ground during the day.Once the sun set (after 7 p.m. EDT), the snow began to accumulate mainly on grassy areas and overpasses across the area. By evening, the heaviest precipitation was confined to Southeast Pennsylvania. Grassy area accumulations averaged 1 to 3 inches across the region. Roads and overpasses became slippery and resulted in accidents. Within Philadelphia two fatal accidents occurred. At 6 p.m. on the 9th, an 83-year-old female passenger was killed at the intersection of 68th Street and Media when a vehicle crashed into a tree. At 720 p.m. a 23-year-old male was killed by a vehicle at the intersection of Erdrick and Cottman Streets. According to police reports slippery roadways were contributing factors in both accidents. An estimated (Because it melted as it fell.) 2.4 inches of snow FELL at Philadelphia International Airport bringing the record breaking season SNOWFALL total to 65.5 inches. At the Lehigh Valley International Airport, 0.2 of an inch of snow fell. This left the seasonal total 0.1 of an inch short of the record 75.9 inches set just two winters ago. Accumulations included 3 inches in Tobyhanna, Green Lane, Perkasie, Exton and Glenmoore, 2 inches in Springtown and 1 inch in Valley Forge. For most locations this was the last measurable snow event of the season. |
