| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | On September 2nd, A dry but vigorous shortwave and attendant cold front moved through the region via a dry northwesterly flow aloft. Ahead of the cold front, strong westerly winds combined with low humidity and dry fuels to create critical fire weather conditions over portions of North Central and Southwest Montana. Then the aforementioned cold front sharply shifted winds to the northwest, creating challenges for the fire community. There were at least four known new wildfire starts in the Great Falls CWA. One wildfire, named the Birdseye Fire, located on the north side of Helena prompted evacuations for local residents and businesses. |
| Event narrativeevent_narrative | At approximately 4 pm MDT, the Birdseye Wildfire broke out on the north side of Helena and grew to about 613 acres. Red Flag conditions preceded the fire start, with westerly gusting near 40 mph and relative humidity near 15%. A slightly cooler and more humid air mass moved in around 5 pm MDT as winds shifted to the north and eventually diminished. Evacuations were ordered for areas south of Lincoln Rd, west of Green Meadow and north of Custer but were lifted after 830 pm MDT according to local media. No injuries, fatalities, or property damage was reported with this fire. |
