event_narrativeThe 416 Fire began at the beginning of June from unknown causes about 13 miles north of Durango. The fire initially burned on the west side of Colorado Highway 550 on some private land and then spread into the San Juan National Forest. It grew to a total of 54,129 acres before it was contained at the end of July. Road closures occurred in the San Juan National Forest and also on Highway 550 at times. Operations of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad were halted until mid July. Numerous homes were evacuated during this wildfire. Personal property damage was minimal and mostly confined to vegetation.
