episode_narrativeThe 117 Wildfire ignited on April 17th just off of I-25 exit 117 (hence the name), south of Fountain, CO in southern El Paso County. The car eventually spread into northern Pueblo County as well. A car dragging a muffler down the interstate caused sparks that ignited the fire, as witnessed by multiple people. Strong winds, low RH, and dry fuels allowed the fire to spread rapidly. The fire was 100% contained on April 19th after burning 42,795 acres, making it the 8th largest wildfire in Colorado recorded history. The fire destroyed 18 homes, multiple outbuildings, and caused the evacuation of around 1,000 people. The fire is estimated to have caused $1.3 million worth of damage.
