episode_narrativeThe Virginia Mountains Fire Complex started on the 28th due to lightning. By the end of the month it had burned over 40,000 acres. The largest fire in the complex was the Tule Fire (around 27,000 acres by month's end) which damaged property in Sutcliffe on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe's Reservation.
event_narrativeA combination of heavy fuels and gusty winds caused the Tule Fire to run down the slopes of the Virginia Mountains in the Hardscrabble Canyon area on the 29th. The fire burned 10 structures (including 4 unoccupied homes) and 2 vehicles and forced the evacuation of about 600 persons in Sutcliffe. The fire also knocked out power in the town for several days. A declaration of disaster was made for the reservation and Pyramid Lake was closed for recreation until August 5th.
