| episode_narrative | Deep low pressure moved across southern Canada sweeping a strong cold front through the region. Strong west to northwest winds developed in the afternoon of October 11 along and behind the front. An additional surge of strong winds due to a secondary push of cold air developed overnight into the very early morning hours of October 12. The strongest wind gust of 75 mph was reported in southeast Burleigh County. The strong winds combined with dry conditions to produce wildfires over many areas. A grass fire that burned approximately 5,000 acres in Sioux County, on the Standing Rock Nation, destroyed three homes, a church, and an outbuilding in the Cannon Ball area. The Cannon Ball Elementary School was damaged from smoke and ash, and playground equipment was destroyed. The 550 residents of Cannon Ball were evacuated, and 54 families were sheltered overnight at Prairie Knights Lodge. |
