episode_narrativeHigh pressure created hot and dry conditions in eastern Pinal County. Localized terrain-driven winds allowed a human caused fire to spread through the dry Gila River channel near the community of Kearny. This wildfire was the cause of a number of evacuations and ultimately did destroy several structures.
event_narrativeThe human caused Kearny River Fire occurred in the dry Gila River bed near Kearny, AZ. The fire started just southeast of Kearny, prompting the evacuation of the Stephens Trailer Court and about 300 residents of Kearny. State Route 177 was briefly closed to traffic due to smoke. All but the residents of the trailer court were allowed back in their homes within 48 hours. The riverbed was overgrown with salt cedar, which burned intensely and allowed for wildfire growth northwest, or downstream, to a significant bend in the river near the community of Riverside. Three homes, two outbuildings and one vehicle were damaged or destroyed in the Stephens Trailer Court near the point of the fire's origin. One of the outbuildings contained numerous tools and equipment used to maintain the mobile homes. In total, the wildfire consumed 1428 acres.
