event_narrativeLightning sparked wild fires in the Wakulla Ranger District of the 50,000-acre Apalachicola National Forest, at the junction of Forest Service Roads 348 and 329 (SE corner of Bradwell Bay). Hot, dry conditions, along with occasionally gusty, shifting winds have complicated the firefighting efforts. By midnight Sunday, May 31, wild fires consumed nearly 2,800 acres. No homes or other structures have been threatened. Over 180 firefighters from federal, state, and local departments were called to action. Leon County supported the efforts of the Division of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, and the Wakulla County fire departments.
