One fire, the James John, burned around 5,000 acres southeast of Trinidad and east of Interstate 25, while the larger fire, the Spring, which began in New Mexico, scorched around 20,000 acres. The fires burned pinyon juniper, fir, ponderosa pine, aspen, and grass. Eight structures were lost. The James John Fire was around 9 miles southeast of Trinidad.
