| Event narrativeevent_narrative | At the end of June 2022, the largest wildfire in New Mexico State history had burned 341,735 acres with 93% containment. Containment on the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fire was anticipated in July, but the western edge of the wildfire was within very steep terrain that was inaccessible to first responders. Thus, progress on this wildfire slowed down during the month of July. Fortunately, a very active month for monsoon season brought much needed moisture to the fire, and containment rose to 96% with no change in the acreage burned. No known structures were lost during the month. Note: While originally known as the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fire, officials renamed the fire to the Calf Canyon Fire on July 26, 2022. Moving forward, this is how the wildfire will be referred. |
