| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | A strong storm system brought extreme fire weather conditions to north central Kansas during the afternoon and evening hours of March 29th. An upper level trough deepened nearly directly over the local area during the day, which resulted in a tightening pressure gradient at the surface. Hot, dry air and resultant extreme fire conditions were pulled up from the southwest and into northern Kansas. Several wildfires were reported in the region on this day, but by far the most notable fire locally occurred in Jewell County. The fire started in the early afternoon just northwest of Burr Oak, then quickly raced north-northeast owing to intense wind gusts of 50 to 60 MPH. The northern edge of the fire reached the Kansas, Nebraska state line by the evening, before a strong cold front moved in and switched winds around to the northwest. This wind shift resulted in several flare-ups through the 30th. No homes were lost to the fire, but a few outbuildings and fencing were burned along with approximately 12,000 acres of land. Another impact was significant smoke that was blown northward, which resulted in the closure of Highway 78 and Highway 136. A peak wind gust of 59 MPH was recorded by a mesonet just west-southwest of Beloit. |
| Event narrativeevent_narrative | This wildfire started in the early afternoon and was ignited along 90 Road just south of X Road, approximately two and one-half miles northwest of Burr Oak. Driven by south-southwesterly winds gusting near 60 MPH at times, this fire quickly spread north-northeast. This fire remained east of 90 Road and west of 140 Road, with its northern edge right along the Kansas-Nebraska state line. Crews worked to get the fire under control into the early morning hours of the 30th. A few minor flare-ups occurred during the day on the 30th, driven in part by a switch in winds to the north-northwest, gusting over 45 MPH at times. In total, approximately 12,000 acres were burned. While no homes were lost, a few old outbuildings were burned, as well as fencing. There was minor damage to one fire department's tanker truck due to an accident. The large nature of the fire and strong winds blew smoke well to the north, resulting in low visibility and the closure of Highway 128 north of Burr Oak, Highway 78 south of Guide Rock in Webster County NE, and Highway 136 on either side of the Webster County and Nuckolls County NE border. |
