Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeVeering southerly flow ahead of an approaching cold front helped to advect a rich plume of low-level moisture across South Florida. As showers and thunderstorms associated with the front pushed through the area and stalled, this translated into heavy rainfall and flooding across east coast metro. Also, lightning strikes from one storm struck and damaged the Broward Water Treatment Plant.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeLightning struck the Broward County 2A Water Treatment Plant located on Copans Road in Pompano Beach. The lightning damaged a number of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components including a high service pump, the control modules for two electronically actuated valves, and two programable logic controllers. The failure of this combination of items impeded their ability to fully pressurize the potable water distribution system, resulting in a precautionary boil water order to portions of Broward County.
