episode_narrativeLightning from persistent afternoon thunderstorms east of the mountains in central Oregon over the last several days have started over 100 fires, according to the fire information officer at the Central Oregon Dispatch Center. Just within the last day, 1700 lightning strikes were reported in Central Oregon. Vegetation at lower elevations east of the Cascades have become the driest as they have ever been over the last 10 years. Two of the largest of the lightning caused fires are a 2000 acre fire 40 miles east of Lakeview and a 800 acre fire along the drainage basin of the John Day River southeast of Dayville.
