| episode_narrative | The weather situation once again was set up for a heavy rain event as had been the case during the previous several nights. During the late afternoon a weak low pressure was centred over northeast Nebraska with a stationary front extending through Sioux City through Fort Dodge to Dubuque. During the afternoon significant convergence took place along the frontal boundary. Surface dew point temperatures climbed into the upper 70s to low 80s by late afternoon. CAPE values reached 8000 j/kg by the mid to late afternoon hours. Thunderstorms erupted over the northeast third of Iowa during the late afternoon hours. Initially these storms were scattered, but as the evening progressed they developed into a mesoscale convective complex. Repeat development to the west of the area fueled the heavy rainfall. By the time the night was over, a total of three systems passed over the area, however the heaviest rainfall came with the first round. Rainfall was very heavy over Butler County with 7.9 inches reported in the town of Clarksville between 1600 CST and 2130 CST. Another nearby location received 5.5 inches of rain in a two hour period from 2000 CST to 2200 CST. WSR-88D radar estimates indicated as much as 11.5 inches of rain fell in nearby Floyd and Chickasaw Counties. Based on ground truth from around the area, the WSR-88D estimates appeared to be fairly close to the truth. A very serious flooding situation took place. Nearly every road in counties just to the east of the Des Moines CWA were reported under water. Flooding was very serious across Butler and Bremer Counties, where Governor Vilsack declared a state disaster. Serious flooding also reported in Worth County. Numerous State and U.S. Highways were closed due to high water. Many of the rivers and streams in the area were likely to crest at or near all time record levels. Details on the crests will be covered in the flooding section of this reports instead of the flash flood section however. Flooding of homes and agricultural lands was extensive. Needless to say, by any measure this event was a disaster. The seriousness of the situation was brought on by repeated rainfall on completely saturated soils. As the storms moved across Cerro Gordo County, lightning struck the Iowa Lottery offices in Mason City. Computers were knocked off line, but otherwise damage was minimal. A bit later in the evening, the area of thunderstorms spread southeast into Tama County. As the storms moved through the Tama area, winds were recorded at 64 MPH by the South Tama County High School. Some damage occurred in the area, but it was not extensive. |
