| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | Thunderstorms with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning caused two house fires in Morris County. The lightning caused about 8,000 homes and businesses to lose power in Warren, Hunterdon, Sussex and Morris (1,100 without power) Counties in northwestern New Jersey. Power was not fully restored for the last 1,000 until that evening. In Wharton Borough, a large tree was struck by lightning. It snapped and hit the side of a house. The ensuing fire started on a rear exterior wall and was spreading into the second floor of the home. All of the second floor and some of the first floor suffered water damage. A firefighter was injured after he stepped on a nail. In Mine Hill Township, a lightning strike started a fire in one of the bedroom walls and on the first floor of a home. The fire was extinguished quickly and damage was described as minor. Power outages caused many traffic signals on major roadways to not work through the morning rush including New Jersey State Route 10. In Randolph Township, the municipal building was evacuated after the restored electricity caused a short in a relay switch. The building became filled with smoke. |
