| episode_narrative | For the third day in a row, scattered slow moving thunderstorms developed over the eastern Mohawk Valley of New York during the afternoon of August 5. Torrential rainfall from these storms produced another round of flash flooding in some of the same places that had dealt with it the last two days, especially in Montgomery County. Rain from the first round of thunderstorms caused flooding on the eastbound lanes of the New York State Thruway, with water about a foot deep in the town of Florida. Rain continued to fall and was estimated to accumulate up to 4 inches, causing small creeks to overspill their banks. Water forced residents to evacuate along Happy Hollow Road in the town of Canajoharie. The flooding damaged the foundation of a house, collapsing the wall of a basement. More flooding occurred in the town of Neilston where Dygert Street was heavily damaged. Up to twenty cellars took on water in Fort Plain and had to be pumped out by firemen. The flooding damaged a feeder pipe that serves the village of Fort Plain's water system. A boil advisery was in affect until the following Friday in that town. In the town of Palatine Bridge, raging waters from an unnamed small creek washed away a driveway. Lightning from the same storm struck a house on Market Street in Amsterdam, causing a structural fire to a large house. The house was damaged but not destroyed. Another storm produced heavy rains in Starkville, Herkimer County which caused the Otsquago Creek to overflow onto Frog City Road, undermining a portion of the road. During the flood, stacks of concrete forms for the construction of a house at the site, were washed downstream. In Mariaville, Schenectady County, heavy rains washed out a section of Bernie-Smith Road off Route 159. |
