event_narrativeThe Newnan Times Herald reported that lightning struck a clump of four, very large, Poplar trees on the Cannongate Golf Course, near the small town of Major in extreme northeast Coweta county. The trees average around 125 feet in height. One of the trees was reduced to a 15 foot stump, another to a 40 foot miniature of itself, a third was split and splintered down the middle, and a fourth was blackened and scarred by the lightning strike. The trees were so large that it was estimated that it would take eight men, eight hours to clean up the destroyed trees.
