| episode_narrative | Lightning struck and severely damaged the Mispillion Lighthouse in Slaughter Beach around 9 a.m. EDT. The bolt struck the metal top of the lighthouse and started a fire. The fire moved down the walls of the lighthouse and spread to the adjoining two story keeper house. About 50 firefighters fought the blaze and it was extinguished at 11 a.m. EDT. The metal top collapsed and there was substantial interior damage to the lighthouse. It was deemed unsafe. The adjoining keeper house was also badly damaged. The damage estimate was not available because of the historical nature of the building, it was built in 1873. |
