episode_narrativeThunderstorms rolled east across a portion of south-central Nebraska and brought with them the first severe weather of the season. A measured 76 mph wind gust northwest of Gothenburg was the first report, and that was quickly followed by various hail reports from Kearney and Grand Island. Hail the size of walnuts was reported near Doniphan and Giltner. Despite a recently germinated corn crop, damage to the corn was considered minimal. In most cases, the crop was expected to rebound without yield loss. Around 3 a.m., lightning struck a tower on the Presbyterian Church in Central City. Twenty-five firefighters worked for over 3 hours to contain the blaze. Structural damage was extensive and repair costs were expected to be near $100,000.
