Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeAnother cold front moved through northern Utah, initiating thunderstorms across the area, a couple of which produced severe wind gusts. In addition, lightning struck the National Weather Service Doppler radar on Promontory Point, causing damage and temporarily putting the radar out of service.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeLightning struck the KMTX WSR-88D, operated by the National Weather Service Salt Lake City Weather Forecast Office, and located at Promontory Point. The lightning strike immediately disabled the radar, and it was out of service for almost 24 hours. Some wiring and two circuit boards had to be replaced. In addition, 16 panels of the radome were damaged and had to be replaced.
