Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeA few showers and thunderstorms developed during the morning hours, well ahead of a surface warm front in Kentucky and southwest Virginia. ||After temperatures reached into the upper 70s and lower 80s, along with dew points near 60, more numerous showers and thunderstorms formed by late afternoon. Some mid level disturbances and a westerly elevated inflow, helped the convection survive well into the night.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeLightning struck a petroleum container at a water treatment facility. An oil fire was ignited that caused considerable damage. Since there was a possibility of an explosion, the nearby area was evacuated. ||At the Upshur County Regional Airport, lightning struck one of the ramps. It created several holes in the asphalt. ||An elderly woman suffered minor injuries from being hit by lightning while looking out the screen door of her Gate Street home in Buckhannon.
