Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeAn approaching cold front that ended a week long heat wave also triggered severe thunderstorms across eastern Pennsylvania during the afternoon and early evening on the 23rd. The majority of the wind and lightning damage occurred in southeastern Pennsylvania where PECO Energy reported about 35,000 homes and businesses lost power. A power outage caused significant delays and over a one hour shut down (from 430 p.m. EDT through 545 p.m. EDT) of Amtrak train service between Philadelphia and Boston. Five SEPTA Regional Rail Lines were also affected by the outage.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeA 21-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy were struck and injured by lightning at the Brookside Swim and Tennis Club in Lower Makefield Township. They were running for shelter and passed under a 50-foot-tall evergreen tree when it was struck by lightning. The lightning traveled down the tree to the ground where it struck the woman. The lightning traveled up her body and exited out her arm to the boy. She suffered a first degree burn from a chain around her neck. The boy had an entrance and exit mark from the lightning and also injured his arm where we was holding onto her neck. The boy never lost consciousness, but the lady went into convulsions and lost consciousness. Both were hospitalized and survived.
