Locally strong winds occurred along the leading edge of the storms. The storms occurred in response to a cold front that moved southeast into a very unstable air mass. Northwesterly mid level winds increased to between 30 and 40 knots as a jet streak moved across northern Illinois. These mid level winds enhanced storm organization and intensity. |
