Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeDiurnal heating, very moist air (PWATS 1.8-2.0) and convergence along several boundaries combined to produce numerous severe thunderstorms and pockets of heavy rainfall. Watauga County received an estimated 3 to 5 inches of rain in several hours west of Boone in the upper reaches of the Watauga River basin. A CoCoRaHS observer reported intense rainfall of 4.43 in 90 minutes southeast of Valle Crucis lending credence to similar radar estimates. Despite the heavy rain the only impact reported from the area was minor mudslide that closed a single lane of Route 194 south of Valle Crucis. The Watauga River at Sugar Grove stream gage rose several feet but did not even reach Action Stage.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeA mudslide blocked part of Broadstone Road near Valle Crucis. No damage was reported.
