| episode_narrative | As the remnants of Hurricane Nora collapsed over southwest Utah, high winds and heavy rain occurred. In the higher elevations approximately 400 trees were downed in the Dixie National Forest, Brian Head Ski Resort and Cedar Breaks National Monument. The trees averaged 1-2' in diameter and were mainly located above 10,000' ASL. The trees were not just uprooted due to the saturated soils, but many were sheared about 20-30' up their trunks. "Straight line winds" were the culprit as the trees were downed in a uniform direction varying only with aspect. 3 condominiums were damaged in Brian Head by falling trees. An archaeologist camping in Cedar Breaks was slightly injured when a 10" diameter tree fell on her tent. Heavy rains also inundated southwest Utah during this time. Though most washes and streams showed significant rises, no major flooding was reported. Minor flooding occurred across SR-9 in the Rockville area. 2 bridges near Tropic received erosion problems due to the high streamflows on the Paria River. Some of the higher rainfall totals for this 2-day event included 3.30" at the Lava Point RAWS in Zion National Park, 2.53" in Duck Creek Village, 2.21" in Enterprise and 2.20" in both the Cedar City and Parowan areas. |
