High winds downed many whole trees, large tree branches, and power lines.Widespread wind damage to trees and power lines was reported throughout Union County: New Providence, Summit, Union, Elizabeth, Mountainside and Springfield. A trained spotter also reported up to golf ball size hail, about 1.75 inches in diameter, in Springfield.In Essex County, the Automated Surface Observing System at Newark Liberty Airport measured a peak gust of 56 knots from the northwest at 10:50 pm EDT. Wind damage to trees and power lines was reported in Verona and West Orange. Significant wind damage was observed in Brookdale Park, just northeast of Montclair, where many large branches were snapped off from trees. Lightning struck houses and ignited fires in Verona and Irvington.In Passaic County, trees and wires were downed along Route 3 in Clifton, which blocked parts of the road.In Bergen County, wind damage to trees and power lines was reported in Hasbrouck Heights, Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook, and Hackensack. Heavy rain caused urban flooding along Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights into Lodi and in Maywood. |
