| Event narrativeevent_narrative | A total of 3.00 inches of rain fell in a 12-hour period 2 miles west-northwest of Cromberg.A strong winter storm moved through the Sierra and western Nevada on Dec. 30th and 31st. Heavy rainfall was associated with this storm, with some locations reporting near-record 12- to 24-hour rainfall amounts, especially in the eastern Sierra foothills. Temperatures with this storm were very warm with snow levels as high as 9,000 feet. This correlated to relatively little snowfall being reported, even in the higher elevations of the Sierra. Most of the precipitation was in the form of rain. Since the ground was already saturated, the rainfall quickly ran off, and contributed to the flooding.This New Year's Eve flood event was not as destructive as the incredible New Year's Flood of 1997. However, many locations experienced significant flooding, especially in the Steamboat Creek basin south of Reno, and in Sparks, Nevada. Most of the rainfall ended on December 31st in eastern California, but continued into January 1st in western Nevada. |
