| episode_narrative | Frontal systems remained mostly to the north, leaving only disorganized and widely scattered convection during the month. The heat wave from the 1st through the 5th dried out the ground. Hamlin, downtown Huntington, and downtown Parkersburg all reached 99 degrees on the 4th. The water temperatures in the Ohio River reached the 86 to 88 degree range on the 5th. A second heat wave occurred from the 10th through the 15th. Readings in the mid and upper 90s were common across the lowlands. Weston recorded 97 degrees on the 13th. By the middle of the month, crops and vegetation were being stressed by the strong sun and lack of rain. By month's end, the surface water flow decreased on major rivers and many small streams were not running. Preliminary data indicated that the month was the driest August on record for Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Beckley. At the Wood County Airport near Parkersburg the monthly rain total was just 0.46 inches Even in downtown Parkersburg, the rain total was only 0.77 inches. At the water board plant in Clarksburg, the monthly total was a meager 0.66 inches. At the Raleigh County airport, the total rain for August was just 1.05 inches. Other dry amounts included 0.60 inches at Creston, 0.65 inches at Marlinton, 0.82 inches at Madison, and 0.99 inches at Branchland. Normal rains are 3.5 to 4.5 inches. |
