event_narrativeExtremely heavy rain, aided by moisture from a weak tropical low pressure system, fell in Athens much of the morning, with light to moderate rain continuing throughout the afternoon and evening. By the end of the day, 6.22 inches of rain had fallen in Athens, making it the wettest July day in at least 70 years and the third wettest day for the entire year in at least 70 years. This daily rainfall also helped to bring the month to one of the wettest July's on record as well. By the end of the month, 10.38 inches of rain had fallen, exceeding only July of 1964 with 10.53 inches and July 1959 with 10.39 inches. The all time monthly maximum rainfall for Athens is 14.98, which occurred in December 1948.
