Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeSurface low pressure moved northeast across Iowa during the evening of the 30th. Air in the warm sector was rich in moisture for the time of the year with surface dewpoints in the mid 50s to around 60 and precipitable water values over an inch. CAPE was limited, but sufficient with 500 J/kg available. CAPE in the -10 to -30 C layer of the atmosphere was close to 300 J/kg. Isolated thunderstorms developed just ahead of a cold front as it moved through the state. One storm produced quarter size hail as it skirted the south side of Des Moines. Heavy rainfall occurred across southern Iowa. Numerous reports of 2 to over 3 inches of rain were received from south central into parts of southeast Iowa.
