| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | This early Saturday morning featured a rather typical early-summer round of strong to marginally severe thunderstorms across South Central Nebraska. The event primarily consisted of several small storm clusters tracking in quick succession from west to east generally along the Interstate 80 and Highway 6 corridors between midnight and 630 AM CDT. The only report of severe weather involved quarter size hail near Elm Creek. The main story was locally heavy rainfall in the 1.5 to 3 inch range, with two of the highest known gauge readings of just over 3 inches from the Aurora and Doniphan areas. ||These storms first evolved and intensified along the southern periphery of storm complex tracking across the northern half of Nebraska. The synoptic and mesoscale environment was primed for further nocturnal storm development, with South Central Nebraska positioned north of an east-west oriented surface front bisecting central Kansas. Aloft, a southerly low-level jet at the 850-millibar level accelerated to around 40 knots north of the surface front, resulting in a pronounced zone of elevated warm air advection and moisture transport. Around the time of the Buffalo County hail report, most-unstable CAPE values were around 2000 J/kg, and deep-layer vertical wind shear checked in around 40 knots. |
