Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeA large mid and upper level ridge of high pressure expanded from the Southern Rockies across all of the Ark-La-Tex during July 19th-23rd. Very dry conditions due to the ongoing drought conditions across much of East Texas combined with the compressional warming beneath the ridge resulted in afternoon temperatures ranging from 100-107 degrees each day. Limited mixing was also observed, with resultant and oppressive heat indices ranging between 105 to 110 degrees on the 19th-21st. A cold front slowly shifted southwest across Northeast Texas on July 22nd, with additional compressional warming along and just south of the front resulting in near record heat for the month of July with temperatures near or in excess of 105 degrees, and oppressively high heat indices ranging from 110 to 115 degrees. The pre-frontal compressional warming continued on the 23rd, with ambient air temperatures ranging from 100 to 105 degrees, and heat indices ranging from 106 to 112 degrees. Slightly cooler and drier air spilled southwest across the remainder of East Texas in wake of the frontal passage late in the day on the 23rd.
