This is where heat indices peaked at or above 100 degrees for seven consecutive days. The peak heat index at the Paducah airport reached the following values: July 18 - 105 degrees, July 19 - 103 degrees, July 20 - 105 degrees, July 21 - 107 degrees, July 22 - 100 degrees, July 23 - 105 degrees, and July 24 - 105 degrees. Across the Pennyrile region of west Kentucky and the Henderson-Owensboro area, the duration of hazardous heat indices was shorter. For five consecutive days from July 21-25, heat indices peaked above 100 degrees. The heat index at Hopkinsville peaked between 102 and 105 each day. Local cooling centers were set up at churches or public buildings in a few cities, including Mayfield and Benton. State road maintenance crews adjusted their shift hours to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon. A weak surface high over the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians produced a light south wind flow of hot and humid air for an extended period. |
