Even though very dry conditions associated with this heat continued well into the month and the area never reached a D2 drought classification, several notable actions occurred. Crops were suffering because of the dry weather. By the second week of August, Council Grove reservoir was one of several reservoirs in the state that was releasing water to ensure that member water districts had sufficient supply. Many small rangeland fires occurred and county wide burn bans were in place. By the fourth week of August, the governor had declared a drought warning for all counties. This gave local governments the authority to impose mandatory water restrictions as well as allowing certain agricultural restrictions (like grazing on certain types of land) to be lifted. |
