Event narrativeevent_narrativeA major heat wave hit the St. Louis area in mid-July. Temperatures ranged from the middle 90s to the around 100 with the Heat Index ranging from around 100 to 115. On July 17, 101 people were treated at Busch Stadium during the St. Louis Cardinals baseball game. To make matters worse, severe thunderstorms roared though the area on July 19 and 21, creating the worst power outage in St. Louis history. Up to 700,000 metered buildings lost power at some point through the 21st and for many the power was not restored for a week to 10 days. Over 400 heat related injuries were reported in the City of St. Louis with 4 deaths. Also, over 500 gastrointestinal illnesses were reported during the power outage. This believed to be due to people eating spoiled food from the lack of refrigeration.
