| Episode narrativeepisode_narrative | The last prolonged run of excessive heat of the summer matched the late July one for both temperatures and relative humidity levels. High temperatures on the 13th and 14th (the two hottest days) reached well into the 90s and even around 100 toward New York City. Afternoon heat indices those two days reached as high as 105 to 110 degrees Many utilities set weekend usage records (the two hottest days were on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th). Public Service Electric and Gas set a new weekend usage record of 9,425 megawatts. In Somerville (Somerset County), dozens of youths collapsed during a Step Drill Competition at the unairconditioned Somerville Middle School on the 13th. The competition was shut down at 330 p.m. EDT. The high temperature that day in Somerville was 100 degrees. Hospitals saw a slight increase in heat exhaustion cases. Fall athletic practices were curtailed because of the heat. The excessive heat ended as a strong cold front moved through New Jersey during the night of the 14th. Highest temperatures during the current hot spell included 102 degrees at the Newark International Airport (Essex County), 100 degrees in Somerville (Somerset County), 99 degrees in Belmar (Monmouth County) 98 degrees in Estell Manor (Atlantic County) and Flemington (Hunterdon County), 97 degrees at the Philadelphia International Airport and Somerdale and Pennsauken (Camden County), 96 degrees in Trenton (Mercer County Airport), Sussex (Sussex County), Atsion (Burlington County), Hammonton (Atlantic County) and at the Atlantic City International Airport, 95 degrees in Mount Holly (Burlington County) and Margate (Atlantic County), 94 degrees in Seabrook (Cumberland County), 92 degrees in Millville (Cumberland County) and 90 degrees in Wildwood (Cape May County).The unseasonably hot start to the first half of August helped cement it as not only the warmest August on record, but also the warmest summer on record in the state since statewide records began in 1895. The preliminary statewide August monthly average temperature was 77.3 degrees and for the summer was 75.6 degrees. The latter shattered the previous summer record of 74.6 degrees set in 1949 by a whole degree. At the Atlantic City International Airport, the August monthly mean temperature of 75.8 degrees and the summer mean temperature of 77.9 degrees were both the warmest on record. |
