High temperatures on the 13th and 14th (the two hottest days) reached well into the 90s and afternoon heat indices those two days reached as high as 105 to 110 degrees. Many utilities set weekend usage records (the two hottest days were on Saturday and Sunday). Many fall sports practices were cut short because of the excessive heat. The excessive heat ended as a strong cold front moved through Delaware during the night of the 14th. The unseasonably hot start to the first half of August helped cement it as one of the ten warmest Augusts on record. Highest temperatures during the current hot spell included 96 degrees at the New Castle County Airport, 94 degrees in Georgetown (Sussex County) and 93 degrees in Dover (Kent County). The two hot spells in the first half of the month were enough to help give New Castle County Airport its 6th warmest August on record with a monthly mean temperature of 77.9 degrees. For the state of Delaware as a whole, it was the 12th warmest August on record (statewide average temperature of 76.6 degrees) and the 7th warmest summer on record (statewide average temperature of 75.9 degrees). |
