episode_narrativeAn unusually strong upper level ridge of high pressure built over North Texas early in the month. This allowed afternoon high temperatures to climb into a range from the upper 90s to around 106 degrees for most of the month. The heat and humidity was particularly bad during the period from the 12th through the 21st, when afternoon highs were over 100 degrees. At the D/FW Airport, the average high during that ten day period was 103.3 degrees F, with the highest temperature of 106 degrees occurring on the 16th. Overnight lows during that period also contributed to discomfort and stress, as they ranged from the upper 70s to the lower 80s.The combination of prolonged exposure to the high heat and humidity contributed to the deaths of several people in Dallas County. Most of the heat related deaths were among the elderly. The heat was oppressive across the rest of North Texas, but no other heat deaths were reported.
