Episode narrativeepisode_narrativeWarm, moist air moved over an extensive snowpack to cause rapid melting of the snow. The result was dense advection fog which reduced visibility to less than a quarter mile and in many areas near zero. The fog at least partially contributed to an accident in St Joseph county MI where 1 person died and 2 others were injured.
Event narrativeevent_narrativeDense fog was widespread across the county through the period. Local law enforcement said a 60 year old man was killed in a two vehicle crash. The man was driving west on Pleasant Road around 5 p.m. Sunday. A vehicle driven by a 27 year old male, was northbound on Summit Road, and due to foggy conditions, one of the drivers did not see a stop sign, striking the other vehicle and forcing it into a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver and a passenger were treated for minor injuries. While the fog was a factor, speed likely a larger one.
