episode_narrativeA nearly stationary high pressure system anchored over the nearby Atlantic brought Eastern Pennsylvania dense fog for four days from the 21st through the 24th of November. Widespread visibilities of a quarter of a mile or less occurred. Dense fog first formed during the evening of the 20th in the Poconos and the Lehigh Valley. Patchier dense fog formed in southeastern Pennsylvania the morning of the 21st. As the high pressure system settled into the region and the light onshore flow became established, the fog began forming earlier and burning off later on successive days. Dense fog formed the evening of the 21st just before midnight and did not burn off until around noon on the 22nd. The next two evenings (the 22nd and 23rd), the dense fog formed around sunset and did not burn off as late as 11 a.m. EST the ensuing days. On the 24th, the winds shifted from the east to the southwest and this prevented widespread dense fog from forming again. The dense fog contributed to a chain reaction accident in the Poconos that resulted in two deaths and 106 injuries. Just after midnight on the 21st six buses filled with Penn State students were heading west on Interstate 80. Near the Eastside Borough in Carbon County the first bus in the caravan encountered near zero visibilities on the roadway. The driver of the first bus tried to slow down and pull over to the side. Before he did that, the second bus crashed into the rear of the first bus. The third bus then struck the back of the second bus, bounced off it and slid into the first bus. The fourth bus hit the back of the 2nd and 3rd buses. A car then slid into the buses and a second car that swerved to miss the buses collided with a pick-up truck. The 50-year-old male driver of the second bus and a 23-year-old female on the third bus were killed. Of the 106 injuries, 5 were serious. Another chain reaction accident occurred on the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia during the evening of the 22nd. A dozen vehicles were involved and one rested atop another. There was only one serious injury. Traffic was backed up for miles.
