episode_narrativeThunderstorms developed to the southeast of Phoenix and over portions of northern Pinal County during the evening hours on August 11th. Some of the stronger storms generated gusty outflow winds that reached to at least 40 mph; the winds were sufficient to cause areas of blowing dust that lowered visibility to one quarter mile or below. From about 1900MST to 1930MST, multiple spotter and public reports were taken between Casa Grande and the Ak Chin Indian Reservation indicating dense blowing dust lowering visibility to one quarter mile or below. There were no dust storm warnings issued and no accidents or injuries resulted from the severely restricted visibility.
event_narrativeThunderstorms developed to the southeast of Phoenix during the evening hours on August 11th and some of the stronger storms generated gusty outflow winds which reached to about 40 mph. The winds were strong enough to generate areas of dense blowing dust that impacted portions of northwest Pinal County, from Casa Grande northwest to the Ak Chin Indian Reservation. At 1926MST, a member of the public located about 1 mile southeast of the town of Maricopa reported less than one quarter of a mile visibility in a dust storm. At about the same time, a trained weather spotter 4 miles north of Casa Grande reported visibility down to one eighth of a mile in a dust storm. A bit earlier at about 1910MST, the official AWOS weather station at the Ak Chin Airport measured one quarter of a mile visibility in blowing dust with wind gusts to 38 mph. A Dust Storm Warning was not issued; fortunately there were no reports of accidents or injury due to the dust storm and the sharply restricted visibilities.
