event_narrativeIsolated to scattered thunderstorms developed across the southeast portions of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area during the afternoon hours on September 1. Some of the stronger storms generated gusty outflow winds reaching or even exceeding 50 mph. The gusty winds stirred up significant amounts of dust which resulted in a dust storm that impacted Phoenix Mesa-Gateway airport. According to the official AWOS weather station at the airport, at 1655MST visibility lowered to one eighth of a mile in a dust storm. Shortly thereafter a Dust Storm Warning was issued at 1708MST, and at 1710MST a wind gust to 52 mph was reported. No accidents were reported due to the sharply reduced visibility.
