episode_narrativeA cold front moved through the Texas Panhandle during the midday hours of the 3rd. The combination of a tight surface pressure gradient and strong winds aloft mixing to the surface led strong surface winds of 35 MPH to 38 MPH. These strong winds lofted loose dirt into the air and reduced surface visibility to less than a quarter mile in Skellytown (Carson County), and Amarillo (Potter and Randall Counties). Less than a quarter mile visibility was reported at 1:22 PM CST by a trained spotter traveling State Highway 152 near Skellytown. Less than a quarter mile visibility was observed by the NWS office in Amarillo (Potter County), and off duty NWS Meteorologist at Soncy Street and 34th Ave (Randall County) between 1:00 PM CST and 2:00 PM CST. Winds decreased after 2:00 PM CST and brought an end to dust storm conditions.
