episode_narrativeThe drought that affected much of the region since the summer of 1998 finally came to an end in Highland County. The county was still in a mild drought at the beginning of the month, but over 2 inches of much needed rain fell between the 1st and the 12th, ending the water shortage. Mandatory water restrictions were finally lifted. By October 30th, state officials estimated Virginia farmers had drought losses of more than $165 million, not including pasture or damage from livestock and poultry producers.
