episode_narrativeThe drought that gripped the Middle Atlantic States throughout much of the growing season eased in mid August. Normal and in some cases heavier than normal rainfall returned. The drought for all intents and purposes ended with the arrival of the torrential rain associated with Hurricane Floyd on the 16th. As much as 12 inches of rain (or nearly 4 months worth of normal rainfall) fell from Floyd across Southeast Pennsylvania with as much as 10 inches elsewhere across Eastern Pennsylvania. The drought emergency was lifted by Governor Tom Ridge on September 30th. Agricultural losses throughout the state of Pennsylvania were estimated at around 700 million dollars, 50 million dollars in Berks County alone.
