episode_narrativeThe drought severity increased again for the western lowland counties, generally west of the Interstate 79 corridor. Less than an inch of rain fell in Huntington for the entire month, making it the 6th driest September on record for that city. A few more wells went dry. Meanwhile, the drought actually eased a bit in the mountainous counties, from Elkins to Beckley. Rains of 3 to 4 inches were common during the month in these mountain areas. Most of that rain fell on the 5-6th, from the remains of Hurricane Dennis and on the 29th from a cold front. The heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Floyd remained east of this region on the 16th.
