episode_narrativeDry conditions persisted through July with some locations reporting only 20 percent of the normal rainfall. Agriculture was again the hardest hit. Most fruits and vegetables were undersized and the harvest was (or will be) much earlier than normal because of the dry conditions. The hay crop was also lower than normal. Many irrigation ponds went dry. The dry conditions increased the fire danger throughout the state and many lightning induced brush or forest fires were reported. During the month, 101 new daily record low flows occurred in Maine rivers. Eight of the United States Geological Survey's ground-water monitoring wells were at record lows for July. The Palmer drought severity index remained in the moderate to severe category all month.
