| episode_narrative | The drought continued to spread and strengthen in West Virginia. Most counties saw a deterioration of stream flow and soil moisture during June. Small streams and small farm ponds began to go dry. June rains of only 1 to 2 inches were common. Summersville and Madison both observed less than an inch of rain for the entire month. It was the driest June on record for Beckley and the second driest June for Elkins. A heat wave sent maximum temperatures into the 90s for 8 consecutive days from the 6th through the 13th across the lowlands. On the 10th, Spencer, Hamlin, and Madison all reached 99 degrees. Charleston had 98 degrees, while Huntington saw 97.Governor Underwood started a voluntary water conservation program for both citizens and businesses. On the 28th, he declared an agricultural state of emergency. Very few farmers had a second cutting of hay. |
